What do consultations cover?

Life in general practice is wonderfully varied!

On a typical day, our GPs may conduct a diving medical to support someone’s love of the ocean, reassure the parents of a feverish toddler, refer a child for an ADHD assessment, spend time with a new mum navigating post-natal depression and then prescribe medications and offer lifestyle advice to help a middle-aged patient reduce their risk of heart disease. And that’s all before lunch!

General practice consultations may include:

  • Assessment and treatment of acute illness or injury
  • Chronic disease management plans and reviews
  • Mental health treatment plans
  • Women’s and men’s health care
  • Iron infusions
  • Childhood and adult vaccinations
  • Contraception
  • Pregnancy care
  • Preventative health checks and screening
  • Medical certificates for work or study
  • Referrals to specialists or allied health providers
  • Review of test results and ongoing conditions

FAQs

What is a general practitioner?

General practitioners (GPs) are qualified doctors trained to care for a wide range of health needs. Often the first point of contact in the healthcare system, they provide ongoing, whole-person care for patients at every age and stage of life.

The role of a GP includes:

  • Supporting the physical, mental and emotional health of infants, children, adults and older people
  • Diagnosing and treating illness and injury
  • Providing preventative care such as health checks, screening and immunisations
  • Family planning, including contraception, pregnancy testing and antenatal care
  • Developing chronic disease management plans and managing conditions like diabetes or asthma
  • Developing mental health treatment plans to support patients with conditions such as anxiety and depression
  • Caring for people living through domestic or family violence
  • Coordinating care with specialist doctors and allied health providers
  • Prescribing medications and arranging referrals
  • Supporting veterans or those on Workers’ Compensation
  • Providing medical certificates for work or study.

You may see your GP occasionally when you catch a short-term illness or more regularly if you’re going through a difficult season or managing a long-term medical condition. GPs often become trusted advisors who help you understand your health needs and navigate the healthcare system with clarity and confidence.

Standard consultations are generally up to 15 minutes.

Some things can’t be done in 15 minutes, though! It’s best to book a longer consultation if you:

  • Have complex concerns
  • Need to discuss several issues
  • Require a chronic disease management plan or mental health treatment plan
  • Are seeking mental health care.

Flynn’s Beach Medical Centre is a private billing practice. Most appointments incur a fee, which is payable on the day. We’ve detailed our fees so that you know what to expect before you book.

If you have a valid Medicare card, you will usually be able to claim a rebate for most services. The rebate amount depends on the consultation type and Medicare item number.

If your preferred GP is unavailable, options may include:

  • Booking with another GP within the practice
  • Telehealth consultations where clinically appropriate
  • Accessing after hours medical advice via Healthdirect

Our team is happy to help you find the most suitable option.
